This volume (1) describes his brief journeying in the Cape Colony, and the early part of his several years of hunting and specimen-collecting in Natal and Zululand.

Gives a first-hand description of the conflict between the Boers and the British, at Port Natal, in 1842. After this, the author travels northwards to the Limpopo; and writes of birds and big game, and of peoples and customs.
Very rare to find both volumes, a great find.
