157 pages plus 54 plates and 2 pages of watermarks. Quarter blue morocco spine & corners, tan cloth sides, spine titled in gilt, top edge gilt. Spine sunned to green, leather scuffed at joints and extremities. Book plate on paste down. A few protruding deckles are dusty; otherwise the contents are fine. Number 217 of 250 copies printed at the Shakespeare Head Press on paper handmade made at Laverstoke Mills. Plates are collotypes, microphotographs of fibres, and photos of papermakers at work; these are printed on handmade J. Barcham Green paper. There are also numerous text illustrations. The early watermarks were reproduced in the paper by a mold especially made by J. B. Green. Chapters are devoted to hand papermaking in China, Japan, Kashmir, India, among Eastern Arabs, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Holland, England, and America. Scarce.
