Written by the expedition leader and illustrated with his photographs, this is the story of the Welsh Guards’ remarkable journey across Africa. Planned as a true adventure in the old-fashioned sense, the expedition was designed to take novice expeditioners, some of whom had never left Britain before, and give them a challenging, demanding and potentially dangerous experience in a foreign environment. During the 11 months of his journey they covered 40,000 miles of extreme conditions. Along the way they crossed deserts, climbed some of the most hazardous mountains and made their way through the jungles of Zaire. The expedition had a hard core team of four, and at each of the five stages of the journey a new quota of about 20 inexperienced personnel joined the group. They were often placed in extreme situations and it is great credit to all concerned that the expedition arrived at its final destination on time, on budget and having only incurred minor cuts and grazes.
