This book is a very good look at a remarkable approach to conducting counter-insurgency operations. … This book should be a mandatory read for Non-commissioned officers and Officers serving in special mission units or special operations the world over.
Very nice read about the most clandestine, effective, run amok unit in the a Rhodesian military. Rhodesians will immediately recognized places and names even though you are not Scout myself. Time later has told a somewhat different story on some of the events (or lack of telling events that were detrimental) by Reid-Daly. If anyone in the Rhodesian military had a knack for making enemies, it was the author but in hindsight, one can say he earned it fair and square. To hear a Scout OC tell the story, one can’t help believe that the Scouts were the only ones doing all the work. They certainly did but the author gives little credit to the RLI and other Rhodesian Regiment units. Still very worth reading and full of facts, history, and unit procedures. My own experience with the scouts was simply this………………..the Scouts were never wrong. A callout would be initiated by a Scout manning an observation point. The Scout(s) would claim to have seen X number or terrs or women at feeding parties, ect. Sometimes a FireForce or responding unit would find nothing, no tracks or evidence of the terrs and this would be dubbed a ‘lemon’. When questioned, the Scouts would always point a finger at the other units claiming carelessness or late arrival, ect. Never the Scouts fault and the author backed his people 100% of the time. They were beyond approach so to speak. But the fact is, there was no better unit at pseudo operations in the bush where the enemy was constantly infiltrated and terminated..
