This bulletin covers an area of 1025 km2 of Karoo and Kalahari sediments overlying Precambrian rocks in the Lubimbi, Hankano and Dalia coalfield, some 80km east of Wankie. Despite intensive drilling programs by Lubimbi Coal Areas Ltd, in the 1950’s and the industrial Development Corporation (Rhodesia) Ltd. between 1974 and 1976, both of which delineated substantial reserves of thermal coal, the fields are still unexploited. Both investigations sought to establish reserves of feed stock for oil generation. Other than pottery clay quarried near Dahlia there is yet no mining activity in the area.
The area was mapped by Mr Thompson from 1974 -1976 using Arial photographs and topographic maps on a scale of 1 : 50 000 supplied by the Department of the Surveyor-General. The accompanying geological map, text figures and plates were drawn by Miss L Morrison in the Geological Survey Drawing Office.
