Description
The author’s ideological bias is worn on his sleeve, much to the detriment of the book. Filled with detail, this is a close account of events leading to Zimbabwean independence, but Martin seems to lack objectivity. He appears to identify so strongly with the Zimbabwean cause that he is willing to dismiss or overlook any atrocity committed by the rebel forces given the justness of their cause. Given the profound corruption, violence, and incompetence of the Mugabe government from independence to present, one wonders how he might re-appraise this perspective today. The tyrants thrown off offered a better quality of life and safety than the genocidal tyrant put in power, and the British government was already working to end colonial rule in a way that offered a stable and sustainable transition. This is not to say that Zimbabweans did not have a right to self-rule; clearly they did. But Martin would have us rejoice that the good guys won, when history tells us that only members of Mugabe’s family and his loyal cronies benefited, and did so through murderous means over decades, leaving Zimbabwe impoverished, looted, and broken. Zimbabwe today is a disaster by any economic, health, or human rights standard, with mass unemployment and an HIV infection rate of 14%+ “book Review KH Vaughn
