This book brings together the fine art, architecture and applied arts of South Africa, and provides a comprehensive assessment of their development and achievements. Three centuries of the the title have been divided into sections : Dutch period (1652-1820) and English period (ca. 1795-1895) and a South African period (ca. 1885 to today). An introductory chapter on European art up to the eighteenth century supplies a background ind introduction to our own artistic development, and each successive section opens with a short historical and social sketch, followed by chapters on the art and artists of the period ………. Chapters on prehistoric rock art and Hindu and Muslim religious architecture are included and the book ends with a glossary and index.
