On 2.6.1885, Farini left Cape Town on a train to Kimberley (Tin Town 1878). Wanting a diamond mine of his own one day, he visits the Kimberley mines. Mule wagons were packed, to proceed to the Kalahari. Unable to use the mules and horses in this land, he tried to hire oxen to pull his wagons. he tasted Sama melons (bushman’s potato) and his men tasted the black ants (bushman’s rice). They tried to dig for diamonds and found none. Apart from springbok and guinea fowls, all other life had been hunted out here. Farini collected some insects for his brother. Chasing the ostriches, Farini gets lost in the desert and had no water. Nearly unconscious, he was lucky to be found by his men and then taken to his wagon, taking 1–2 days to recover.
Looking for game, 2 lions changed the gemsbok and then the horses. However, the lion had been stabbed by the gemsbok to death. They rescued a German Trader – Fritz, suffering from fever and starvation. On night, with a great roar, a lion sprang into the camp at night, scattering the fire, the cattle and the Africans. The lion was shot dead. At the next village, they had their bath, first for weeks. The chief of this village was given the lion skin. Further on, they hunted 2 rhinos. At Lake Ngami, they met pygmy bushmen. They hunted 2 elephants, who had charged them. Sitting over a giraffe carcass, Farini watched 3 lions slowly sneaking to the dead giraffe. Shots sent to lions packing. 4 giraffes were shot and their meat strips hung to dry. When they killed 2 ostriches, the other ostriches roared like lions.
On the Nosob River, they came to a mountain and at the foot of which they found stone walls of a possible lost city, partly buried in sand. Many photos were taken. They headed north to visit the Great Falls on the Orange River. Various streams, rapids, gorges and rocks were seen, making them wet and cold. (Now called AUGHRABIES FALLS NP – 480ft Falls with 2 hotels, campsite and activities). After making a plan of the river and its islands, they headed to Upington, exchanged their rifles for oxen and arrived at Cape Town. Farini boards the ‘Drummond Castle’. headed for England and met Col George Baden Powell on this ship.
The ‘Lost City of Kalahari’ was never found, even by numerous expeditions.
